Data Fellowship

Salesforce and Equal Measures 2030 have joined together to create a fellowship for data journalists.

By providing training in Tableau data visualization software and personalized support, the fellowship aims to strengthen the capacity of women and gender minority journalists to use data in their journalism and to foster a network of data-driven journalists who are passionate about gender equality issues. Through this support, we seek to increase the reach and impact of journalism about underrepresented issues and historically underserved communities, and enhance connections between data journalists and advocates at global, national and local levels.

The fellowship started on the 24th of October and will run remotely until early April. This year, 11 journalists and gender equality professionals from across Latin America will participate in the fellowship, including from Colombia, Guatemala and Venezuela.  Learn more about the fellows, and why data journalism is important to them and how they plan to use data to advocate for equality in our blog: Introducing the 2023 Data Journalism Fellows in Latin America

  • To collaborate with women and gender minority data journalists in Colombia and Guatemala to strengthen their capacity to analyse and use data in their journalism and to foster a network of evidence-based and data-driven journalists who are passionate about gender equality issues
  • To increase the reach and impact of journalism about key gender equality issues, through enhanced analytical and data visualization skills and capacities
  • To enhance connections between data journalists and advocates at global, regional and national level to have greater collective influence on gender equality issues
  • To bring analytics to underrepresented issues and historically underserved communities
  • To increase take up and dissemination of EM2030 data, analysis and tools (especially the SDG Gender Index data)

Over the course of 6 months, the program will include:

  • A Tableau Creator license: Each Fellow will receive a Creator license valid for two years.
  • Access to self-led training modules on Tableau products including on Desktop I, Desktop II, data structuring, and visualization best practices (in Spanish or English)
  • Monthly two-hour virtual meetings with the other Fellows (convened by EM2030): Each virtual meeting will give Fellows an opportunity to learn from each other’s experiences and to seek help with their own data visualization and analysis questions.
  • One final presentation: one final virtual meeting where Fellows will present their products to the other Fellows and stakeholders from EM2030 and Tableau.
  • Tableau staff support: The Tableau Foundation will pair each fellow with a Spanish-speaking technical support person to provide tailored, one-on-one technical guidance on crafting a data-driven story
  • EM2030 focal point:  EM2030 will pair each Fellow with an EM2030 focal point for support such as questions about the SDG Gender Index, other data technical questions, advocacy and/or communications support
  • Connection with local advocates:  Fellows will have the opportunity to meet local advocates (EM2030 national and regional partners in Latin America) during the project, for example for help identifying issues for investigation, for access to these organizations’ data or to provide further context and lived experience related to the issues raised in the data
  • $1,500 cash stipend: The stipend will come in the form of an unrestricted grant and will be disbursed in part up front and in part after the final presentation.
  • The potential for additional presentations in national/regional/global conferences (to be confirmed, depending on themes covered, products produced etc.)

Each of our Data Fellows created powerful stories that brought together data and storytelling to bring underrepresented issues and the voices of historically underserved communities to the fore. Their work underscores the importance of collecting gender-disaggregated data and equipping advocates and journalists with the tools to transform the data into narrative. From women’s access to justice, to child pregnancies to maternal mortality, read more about the stories produced by our data fellows and their experiences in this fellowship.
