”Emilia Perez”, This World is Not for Patriarchy

Wrapped in a satirical musical full of satire, the film Emilia Perez which has been showing in theaters since November 1, 2024, provides a different color regarding the issue of transwomen and women. Director Jacques Audiard packages it through a series of unexpected stories in each act.

Despite its Mexican background, Audiard, who is from France, finds it difficult to eliminate the typical French complexity in her work this time. The result is that Emilia Perez is present with a complexity full of paradoxes that are packaged with humanist values, but expressed lightly and worth enjoying.

The story begins with lawyer Rita Mora Castro (Zoe Saldana) who is handling a case involving the murder of a woman by her husband. However, Rita’s superior, Berlinger (Eduardo Aladro), asks her to draft a defense note claiming that the case is a suicide so that the husband, who is their client, can be freed from legal charges.

Referring to the SDG Gender Index 2024 data from Equal Measures, not a single country out of 139 countries, including Mexico and Indonesia, is on track to achieve the gender equality target by 2030. The prediction is that gender equality can be achieved when a girl born today turns 97 years old.
